During power outages in the middle of winter season the main problem is having a way to heat your home and keep your family safe.
In our section my friend and I experienced ice storms that can knock out power for afternoons and my friend and I knew that my friend and I needed an alternative source to do just that, however rather than install a whole home generator my friend and I opted to have a wood stove put in instead.
I thought that my friend and I could typically find some source of wood to burn even if my friend and I had to use the home office table. I know that sounds extreme however if it ever came down to it my friend and I would do just that. My good friend and I have a giant shipment of split firewood delivered each Summer and stack it in the burn so that it stays dry. This gives us peace of mind that my friend and I will be sizzling and cozy no matter what and my friend and I use the wood stove yearly to help supplement our heat. My good friend and I have a gas burning boiler which provides warmth throughout the home and that is his main heat source however it is nice to save on part of our energy cost by using the wood stove as well. The only complaint I have about using wood to heat our home is the fact that one of us has to get up in the middle of the night to put another log on the fire to keep it going. Thankfully my friend and I only have to maintain this routine if the power is out because the boiler keeps us sizzling throughout the night the rest of the season.
